The Judge’s Choice
26 Apr
We’ve got lots to celebrate, and celebrate we are!
We’re thrilled to be so highly recognised and awarded by the esteemed judges at some of New Zealand’s most prestigious wine shows – the Hawke’s Bay A&P Bayley’s Wine Awards and the New Zealand International Wine Show.
Our Chief Winemaker, Ant Mckenzie, said that while vintage 2021 has been of exceptional quality and the resulting wines will be celebrated and reflected on for many years to come, having to deal with COVID 19 restrictions threw in a few challenges at times. He was very happy with the end results and the wins that have followed. “It shows what we are doing is right.”
HAWKE’S BAY A&P BAYLEY’S WINE AWARDS 2021:
Hãhã 2021 Pinot Gris – GOLD MEDAL and top honour of ‘TROPHY PINOT GRIS IN SHOW’
Youthfully charming and elegant, our Pinot Gris exhibits succulent apple, pear and nectarine flavours. With vibrant fruit flavours, exceptional aromatics and a rounded mouthfeel it is delightfully drinkable. With a lower yield due to a combination of frosts and cooler weather during flowering, the grapes ripened quickly resulting in a compact and quick harvest. The grapes were sourced from a number of vineyard sites in Hawke’s Bay.
NEW ZEALAND INTERNATIONAL WINE SHOW 2021:
Amazing results for us from the largest wine competition held in New Zealand. Now that’s something worth celebrating!
Hãhã 2021 Syrah – GOLD MEDAL
Our silky smooth Hãhã Syrah shows juicy blackcurrant and blueberry notes. Fresh and delicious with lovely savoury notes and a hint of pepper and spice. The fruit for our 2021 Syrah was sourced from a tightly-centred group of vineyards in the Bridge Pa sub-region of Hawke’s Bay. The grapes were harvested into small bins to ensure we had whole berries for fermentation. The fruit was cold soaked in open top fermenters for a brief period before the fermentation process kicked off with natural yeasts from the vineyard and winery. Post fermentation the wine was pressed to oak to undergo malolactic fermentation.
Hãhã 2021 Pinot Noir – SILVER MEDAL
A big, aromatic Pinot Noir with dark berry, black cherry and underlying savoury characters. Grapes were harvested from vineyards in the Wairau Valley and Awatere Valley in Marlborough, New Zealand. The juice was cold soaked prior to temperature controlled fermentation, in a mixture of stainless steel tanks and oak barrels. With minimal intervention and fining, this wine was matured on oak for 8 months prior to filtering and bottling.
